द्विजा झषालिकर्कटास्ततो नृपा विशोऽङ्घ्रिजाः ।
वरस्य वर्णतोऽधिका वधूर्न शस्यते बुधैः ।।२२।।
- Varna Koota carries 1 point.
- The groom's Varna should traditionally be equal to or higher than the bride's Varna.
- A higher Varna of the groom's sign lord may cancel a Varna mismatch.
Pisces, Scorpio and Cancer are assigned to Brahmin Varna; Aries, Leo and Sagittarius to Kshatriya Varna; Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn to Vaishya Varna; and Gemini, Aquarius and Libra to Shudra Varna. Classical authorities state that it is not favourable when the bride's Varna is higher than the groom's.

A traditional verse concerning Varna Dosha states:
वर्णश्रेष्ठा तु या नारी हीन वर्णस्तु यः पुमान् ।
विवाहं यदि कुर्वीत तस्या भर्ता न जीवति ।।
Even when the groom's Moon-sign Varna is lower than the bride's, the dosha is traditionally considered cancelled if the lord of the groom's sign belongs to a higher Varna than the lord of the bride's sign.
