Distribution of Points in Ashtakoota Matching

वर्णों वश्यं तथा तारा योनिश्च ग्रहमैत्रकम् ।
गणमैत्रं भकूटं च नाडी चैते गुणाधिकाः ।।२१।।

The eight categories are: 1. Varna, 2. Vashya, 3. Tara, 4. Yoni, 5. Graha Maitri, 6. Gana Maitri, 7. Bhakoota and 8. Nadi. Each successive koota carries one point more than the preceding one. Varna carries 1 point; Vashya 2; Tara 3; Yoni 4; Graha Maitri 5; Gana Maitri 6; Bhakoota 7; and Nadi 8.

Explanation: According to the arithmetic rule known as Saika Padaghna Padartham, the total number of points is:

$$\frac{(8+1) \times 8}{2} = 36$$

The term “guna” or “point” denotes a criterion covering a particular aspect of the prospective couple's married life. When the bride and groom obtain 18 or more points in the overall matching, their nakshatra compatibility is generally considered suitable for marriage. The higher the score above 18, the stronger the conventional Ashtakoota compatibility.

Jyotirnibandha states that a score of 16 is unsuitable, 17 to 20 is moderate, 21 to 31 is good, and 31 to 36 is excellent. When an adverse Bhakoota combination is present, a score up to 20 is regarded as unfavourable, 21 to 25 as moderate, 26 to 30 as good, and 30 to 36 as excellent.
