August 12, 2026 Solar Eclipse – USA Timings, Sutak Kaal & Rashi Effects

Total Solar Eclipse – Partial Visibility in the USA and Vedic Astrology Analysis

The astronomical event on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 is a Total Solar Eclipse globally. The path of totality crosses Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, the Atlantic Ocean, Spain and a small part of Portugal. Totality is not visible anywhere in the United States; however, a partial solar eclipse is visible from parts of the northern and eastern USA.

In Vedic astrology, using the Nirayana/Lahiri zodiac, the Sun and Moon are in the Cancer (Karka)–Ashlesha Nakshatra region during the eclipse. Astronomically, this eclipse occurs near the Moon's descending node; in Jyotisha terminology it may therefore be described as Ketu-related. Rahu and Ketu should be understood here as the lunar nodal points rather than physical planets.

Timing note: Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Detroit were cross-checked against NASA's published local eclipse circumstances; New Jersey, Fairfax, Cleveland and Chicago were checked against local eclipse calculations. Exact contact times can differ by a few minutes within a metro area, so use your precise location for ritual timing.

Major U.S. cities where this eclipse is not visible: Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Los Angeles, San Jose/California and Seattle are among the large Indian-population centres where the August 12 eclipse is not locally visible. Under the traditional visibility-based rule, Sutak is not observed where the eclipse itself is not visible.
Special note for Chicago: The eclipse is technically visible as a partial eclipse in Chicago, but the local magnitude is extremely small. The visual change in the solar disk may therefore be difficult to notice. Safe solar viewing protection is still mandatory.

Sutak Kaal – Traditional Rule

For a visible solar eclipse, Sutak is traditionally observed for four Prahars, approximately 12 hours before Grahan Sparsha. For children, elderly people and those who are ill, food restrictions are traditionally relaxed to one Prahar, approximately 3 hours before the local eclipse begins. Sutak applies only at a location where the eclipse is visible and ends with Grahan Moksha.

Traditionally, new auspicious ceremonies and new ventures are avoided during Sutak and the eclipse. However, Mantra Japa, remembrance of one's Ishta Devata, meditation and Stotra recitation are regarded as appropriate spiritual practices during the eclipse period.

How to View the Solar Eclipse Safely

Never look directly at the Sun during a partial solar eclipse. Use only ISO 12312-2 compliant eclipse glasses or a safe handheld solar viewer. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe. Do not look through binoculars, telescopes or camera optics unless the equipment has a proper solar filter designed for direct solar viewing.

August 12, 2026 Solar Eclipse – Effects on the 12 Rashis

In Jyotisha, Surya signifies Atma, vitality, father, authority, status, confidence and profession. Since this eclipse occurs in Cancer, the following general effects are assessed by counting Cancer from the Janma Rashi (Moon sign).

Janma Rashi Eclipse House General Assessment
Aries 4th Challenging
Taurus 3rd Favourable
Gemini 2nd Moderate / Mixed
Cancer 1st Challenging
Leo 12th Challenging
Virgo 11th Favourable
Libra 10th Moderate / Mixed
Scorpio 9th Moderate / Mixed
Sagittarius 8th More Sensitive
Capricorn 7th Challenging
Aquarius 6th Favourable
Pisces 5th Moderate / Mixed

How remedies are graded: The 3rd, 6th and 11th houses are generally treated as favourable for this transit-based eclipse assessment, so Surya worship is usually sufficient. For the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 10th houses, simple remedies such as Surya worship, Aditya Hridayam and donation of wheat or jaggery may be performed.

For the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses, after the eclipse one may bathe and donate silver or copper representations of Surya and Ketu placed with ghee, together with about 2 kilograms of wheat or wheat flour. If this is impractical, an equivalent monetary donation may be made according to one's means.

Aries (Mesha) – 4th House

For Aries, the eclipse falls in the 4th house of mother, home, emotional peace and property. Domestic restlessness, concern about the mother's health, delays in property or vehicle matters, or reduced mental comfort may be experienced. Avoid making important family decisions purely under emotional pressure.

Eclipse Remedy: Because the eclipse falls in a challenging house, after the eclipse take a bath and, according to your means, donate silver or copper representations of Surya and Ketu placed in a vessel with ghee, together with about 2 kilograms of wheat or wheat flour. If this is not practical, an equivalent monetary donation may be made. Surya worship or Shiva worship is also recommended.

Taurus (Vrishabha) – 3rd House

For Taurus, the eclipse falls in the 3rd house of courage, initiative and siblings. This is generally considered a favourable position. It can strengthen determination, help in overcoming competition and support success through personal effort. Maintain patience in communication with siblings.

Eclipse Remedy: As the eclipse occurs in a favourable house, no special eclipse Shanti is necessary. After the eclipse, bathe, offer Arghya to Surya and recite Surya-related Stotras.

Gemini (Mithuna) – 2nd House

For Gemini, the eclipse falls in the 2nd house of wealth, family and speech. Financial caution is advisable. Expenses may rise, family discussions can become sensitive, and harsh words may create avoidable problems. Those already prone to eye strain or related health issues should not neglect them.

Eclipse Remedy: After the eclipse, take a bath and offer Arghya to the Sun. Recitation of Aditya Hridayam or other Surya Stotras is beneficial. Wheat, wheat flour or jaggery may be donated according to your means.

Cancer (Karka) – 1st House

For Cancer, the eclipse occurs in the Janma Rashi itself, the 1st house. Hence its psychological and physical effect may be felt more personally. Health, vitality, emotional balance and self-confidence need greater attention. Avoid anxiety-driven decisions and maintain a disciplined routine.

Eclipse Remedy: As the eclipse occurs in the Janma Rashi, after it ends take a bath and donate silver or copper representations of Surya and Ketu placed in a vessel containing ghee, together with about 2 kilograms of wheat or wheat flour. If the material donation is not practical, an equivalent monetary donation may be made according to one's means.

Leo (Simha) – 12th House

For Leo, the eclipse falls in the 12th house of expenditure, sleep, isolation and distant places. Unplanned expenses, disturbed sleep, fatigue or medical expenditure may increase. Since Surya is the lord of Leo, protecting vitality and self-confidence is especially important.

Eclipse Remedy: Because the eclipse falls in a challenging 12th house, after the eclipse take a bath and donate silver or copper representations of Surya and Ketu with ghee, together with about 2 kilograms of wheat or wheat flour. If this is not possible, an equivalent monetary donation may be made. Surya or Shiva worship is also beneficial.

Virgo (Kanya) – 11th House

For Virgo, the eclipse falls in the 11th house of gains, networks and fulfilment of desires. This is generally favourable. Delayed work may move forward, useful contacts can help, and new income or gain opportunities may arise. Avoid excessive speculation despite the positive placement.

Eclipse Remedy: As the eclipse occurs in the favourable 11th house, no special eclipse Shanti is necessary. After the eclipse, bathe, worship Surya and offer Arghya. Wheat or jaggery may also be donated.

Libra (Tula) – 10th House

For Libra, the eclipse falls in the 10th house of profession, karma, status and authority. Work pressure may rise, relations with superiors may require diplomacy, and recognition can be delayed. Avoid impulsive decisions regarding resignation, job change or public disputes.

Eclipse Remedy: After the eclipse, take a bath and offer Arghya to Surya. Reciting Aditya Hridayam, Surya Ashtakam or other Surya Stotras is beneficial. Wheat, jaggery or a copper vessel may be donated according to your means.

Scorpio (Vrishchika) – 9th House

For Scorpio, the eclipse falls in the 9th house of fortune, father, gurus, dharma and long journeys. Progress may feel slower, the father's health may need attention, and long-distance travel or important formalities can face delays. Maintain respect and patience in dealings with elders and teachers.

Eclipse Remedy: After the eclipse, bathe and worship Surya with a Sankalpa for the health of the father and welfare of the family. Aditya Hridayam may be recited. Wheat, jaggery or a copper article may be donated.

Sagittarius (Dhanu) – 8th House

For Sagittarius, the eclipse falls in the 8th house of longevity, sudden events and hidden matters. This is a sensitive position. Sudden health concerns, fear, unexpected expenditure or abrupt changes may demand attention. Be particularly careful in travel, driving and physically risky activities.

Eclipse Remedy: Because the eclipse falls in the 8th house, greater importance may be given to remedial measures. After the eclipse, take a bath and donate silver or copper representations of Surya and Ketu placed in a vessel with ghee, together with about 2 kilograms of wheat or wheat flour. If this is not practical, donate the equivalent value according to your means. Surya worship together with Shiva worship is recommended.

Capricorn (Makara) – 7th House

For Capricorn, the eclipse falls in the 7th house of marriage, spouse, agreements and business partnerships. Misunderstandings between partners, tension in marriage or delays in agreements are possible. Give priority to dialogue and mutual understanding rather than confrontation.

Eclipse Remedy: As the eclipse occurs in the 7th house, after it ends take a bath and donate silver or copper representations of Surya and Ketu with ghee, together with about 2 kilograms of wheat or wheat flour. If this is not feasible, an equivalent monetary donation may be made. Shiva worship for marital harmony is also beneficial.

Aquarius (Kumbha) – 6th House

For Aquarius, the eclipse falls in the 6th house of enemies, disease, debt, service and competition. This is generally a favourable placement. It can support the ability to overcome competition, control debts and deal effectively with long-standing problems. Do not neglect routine health care.

Eclipse Remedy: As the eclipse occurs in the favourable 6th house, no special eclipse Shanti is necessary. After the eclipse, bathe and offer Arghya to Surya. Wheat, jaggery or food may be donated.

Pisces (Meena) – 5th House

For Pisces, the eclipse falls in the 5th house of children, education, intelligence and speculation. Concern regarding children or studies, reduced concentration and confusion in decision-making may occur. Exercise restraint in speculative or high-risk investments and communicate carefully in romantic relationships.

Eclipse Remedy: After the eclipse, take a bath and worship Surya. For the welfare of children, education and mental clarity, recite Aditya Hridayam or other Surya Stotras. Wheat, jaggery or ghee may be donated according to your means.

How Should These Rashi Predictions Be Interpreted?

An eclipse does not create an entirely new good or bad result that is absent from the birth chart. Its manifestation depends on the natal positions of Surya, Chandra and Lagna, the running Dasha-Bhukti, current transits, and the relationship of the eclipse Rashi and Nakshatra to the individual horoscope. Therefore, the above predictions should be treated as general Moon-sign transit indications, not as unavoidable events.

Because Surya is the natural Atmakaraka, the purpose of a remedy should not be fear. Maintaining confidence and discipline, performing Surya worship, reciting Aditya Hridayam or other Surya Stotras, and worshipping Lord Shiva are traditional ways of approaching the eclipse period with steadiness.

What to Do During the Eclipse – In Brief
