Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don’t know the exact time?

We recommend using the most accurate time available (e.g., hospital records or eyewitness accounts). Even an approximate time will give you a near-correct tithi.

What is Shraddha Tithi?

Shraddha Tithi is the lunar day (tithi) on which a person passed away. Observing Shraddha on this tithi each year ensures proper homage to ancestors as per Vedic rituals.

Can I change the location later?

Yes. Since tithi depends on local sunrise/sunset times, you can adjust the city or coordinates to reflect the place of passing.

Why should Shraddha be performed?

According to Hindu Dharma Shastra, it is essential for descendants to perform the Shraddha ritual for their deceased ancestors until they attain salvation (moksha). This act is considered a way of providing food and drink to them in the ancestral realms. Every year on the tithi of their passing, ancestors expect this offering. The food offered through Shraddha rituals also nourishes the five elements (Pancha Bhootas), which satisfies the ancestors. By performing this duty, descendants not only avoid the wrath and curses of their ancestors but also ensure the prosperity and growth of their lineage.

What happens if Shraddha is not performed?

Ancestors eagerly await the Shraddha offerings from their descendants on the day of the ritual. If their descendants fail to perform it, the ancestors become dissatisfied and angry, which may lead to them cursing the family. Hindu scriptures state that such negligence can halt the growth and continuation of the family lineage. Performing Shraddha is considered a fundamental duty towards the elders who gave us life.

What to do if Shraddha cannot be performed due to unavoidable reasons?

If you are unable to perform Shraddha on the specific tithi of an ancestor's death, the ritual can be performed on the next Ashtami (8th lunar day), Dwadashi (12th lunar day), Chaturdashi (14th lunar day), or Amavasya (New Moon day). However, if there is a birth or death in the family or among close relatives (a period of ritual impurity known as sutak), Shraddha should not be performed for 11 days. The ritual should be conducted on the 11th day or after the impurity period has concluded.
