Understanding Vedic Timing Rules

In the Vedic system, the day does not start at midnight; it starts at Sunrise. Furthermore, festivals are not decided merely by the date, but by the Tithi (Lunar Phase) prevailing during a specific time window.

Pratahkal (Morning)

Used for festivals involving holy baths (Snana) and donations (Dana), like Makara Sankranti.

Pradosh (Evening)

Crucial for Diwali (Lakshmi Puja), Pradosham, and Ganesh Chaturthi.

Nishita (Midnight)

Essential for deities born at night, such as Janmashtami (Krishna) and Maha Shivaratri (Shiva).

Madhyahna (Noon)

The birth time of Lord Rama. Used to determine the date of Rama Navami.

Frequently Asked Questions & Glossary

Hindu festivals are based on the Tithi (Lunar Day) and the local Sunrise. A Tithi might end at 4:00 PM in India but at 6:30 AM in New York on the same day. This time difference often shifts the 'Vyapini' (prevalence) of the Tithi to the previous day in Western countries.

Vyapini means 'prevailing'. Dharmashastra texts like Nirnaya Sindhu dictate specific times for rituals. For example, Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) requires Amavasya to prevail during Pradosh (evening). If Amavasya exists in the evening on Monday in India, but only in the morning on Monday in USA, the dates will differ.

Smarta followers (family people) observe Ekadashi based on the Sunrise rule. Vaishnava followers (devotees of Vishnu) strictly avoid Dashami Viddha (overlap with the 10th day) and often observe it on the next day. Our calendar lists both when they differ.

This calendar calculates planetary positions using NASA-based algorithms (Swiss Ephemeris) and applies rigorous Dharmashastra logic. It is far more accurate than printed calendars which are calculated for only one specific city (like Varanasi or Ujjain).
