Bhakoota Analysis and Cancellation

Bhakoota Doshas and Exceptions

मृत्युः षष्ठाष्टके ज्ञेयो ऽपत्यहानिर्नवात्मजे ।
द्विर्द्वादशे निर्धनत्वं द्वयोरन्यत्र सौख्यकृत् ।।३१ ।।

Key Takeaways:
  • Bhakoota carries a maximum of 7 points.
  • Bhakoota dosha is cancelled when the two signs have the same lord or when their lords are mutual friends.
  • Traditional exceptions are given for Navapanchaka (5–9) and Dwir-Dwadasha (2–12) combinations.

Bhakoota Dosha Cancellation Verses from Classical Texts

1. Muhurta Pradipa — Auspicious Shashtashtaka Exception

meṣāḷī vṛṣatule karkidhanuṣī siṃhamīnake ।
mithunāṃgane makara kuṃbhau ṣaṣṭāṣṭakeऽpi śubhapradau ।।

Meaning: Aries–Scorpio, Taurus–Libra, Cancer–Sagittarius, Leo–Pisces, Gemini–Virgo and Capricorn–Aquarius are not considered harmful even when the signs occupy a 6/8 relationship. Because their lords are identical or mutually friendly, these Shashtashtaka combinations are regarded as auspicious.

2. Kala Prakasika — Dwir-Dwadasha (2–12) Exception

vaśyatve rāśināthānāmaitryāṃ vā na bhakūṭakam ।
lābhadvitīye rāśīśa sakhye doṣo na vidyate ।।

Meaning: When the sign lords are mutually friendly or one sign is naturally under the influence of the other, the Dwir-Dwadasha dosha arising from a 2/12 relationship does not apply.

3. Jyotih Prakasam — Special Rule for Navapanchaka (5–9)

navame pañcame caiva varusya pañcame śubham ।
vadhvāśca pañcame tvasat putrahā prakīrtitam ।।

Meaning: When the bride's sign is ninth from the groom's sign and the groom's sign is fifth from the bride's sign, the combination is auspicious. The reverse order—where the groom's sign is ninth from the bride's and the bride's sign is fifth from the groom's—is described as harmful to progeny.
