Kuja Dosha and Its Exceptions

Along with Nadi and Bhakoota, Kuja Dosha—also called Manglik or Mangala Dosha—is an important consideration in traditional marriage matching. Mars represents heat, assertion and conflict; therefore, its occupation of sensitive family and marital houses is believed to increase the possibility of disagreement in married life. Classical texts, however, provide many conditions under which the dosha is cancelled or significantly reduced.

1. Definition of Kuja Dosha

lagne vyaye ca pātāle yāmye cātāṣṭame kuje ।
strīṇāṃbaṃdhu vināśaḥ syāt bhartṝṇāṃbaṃdhu nāśanam ।।

Meaning: Kuja Dosha is considered when Mars occupies the 1st house, 12th house, 4th house, 7th house or 8th house from the Ascendant, Moon or Venus. Some traditions also include the 2nd house.

2. Cancellation through Specific Signs — Muhurta Chintamani

catuḥ saptamako bhaumo meṣa karkāṭakālau ।
yathā rāśiṃ śubhaḥ prokto kujāt doṣo na vidyate ।।

Meaning: Even when Mars occupies the 4th or 7th house, Kuja Dosha does not apply when Mars is in Aries or Scorpio, its own signs; Cancer, its debilitation sign; or Capricorn, its exaltation sign, subject to the specific classical rule being applied.

3. Exception for Movable Signs — Jataka Chandrika

cara rāśi gato bhaumaḥ catur āṣṭa vyaye dvaye ।
lagna pāpa vināśasyāt cāre pāpo viśeṣataḥ ।।

Meaning: When Mars occupies a movable sign—Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn—in one of the Kuja Dosha houses, the adverse effect is said to be cancelled or greatly reduced.

4. Cancellation through Jupiter or Mercury — Jataka Parijata

sthāna paṃcako doṣāḥ kujasya guruṇāthavā ।
budhena saha saṃsthityā ddṛṣṭevā naiva saṃbhavet ।।

Meaning: Even when Mars occupies a dosha-producing house, Kuja Dosha is cancelled when Mars is joined by Jupiter or Mercury, or when it receives their aspect, according to this cited rule.

5. Exception for the Signs of the Sun and Moon

ravi iṃdū kṣetra jātānāṃ kuja doṣo na vidyate ।
sveccha mitrāla jātānāṃ tāt doṣaṃ na bhāvet kila ।।

Meaning: Kuja Dosha is not considered in the same way for those born with Leo, the Sun's sign, or Cancer, the Moon's sign, as the Ascendant, and when Mars occupies a friendly sign.

6. Matching Dosha in Both Horoscopes

vadhū varayoḥ jātake tulye kuja doṣe sati ।
doṣo doṣeṇa saṃyuktaḥ dāṃpatya sukha vardhakaḥ ।।

Meaning: When both the bride's and groom's horoscopes contain Kuja Dosha of comparable strength, the two are traditionally regarded as balancing each other, thereby reducing the adverse effect on marital happiness.
