Key Takeaways:
  • Gana Koota carries a maximum of 6 points.
  • The 27 nakshatras are divided equally into Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa Ganas.
  • When both partners belong to the same Gana, the full 6 points are awarded.
  • A Deva-Gana bride with a Rakshasa-Gana groom is treated as a severe mismatch and receives 0 points.
  • Friendship between the sign lords or strong Tara compatibility can cancel Gana Dosha.

Gana Koota Scoring Table

Bride \ Groom Deva Manushya Rakshasa
Deva660
Manushya560
Rakshasa106

Explanation: The principal concern is a combination in which the groom's Gana is considered lower or less compatible than the bride's Gana. Therefore, a Deva-Gana bride with a Rakshasa-Gana groom is assigned 0 points and is described as a particularly unfavourable combination. The reverse combination—a Rakshasa-Gana bride with a Deva-Gana groom—receives 1 point. It still indicates incompatibility, but the traditional assessment treats it as less severe. Manushya–Rakshasa combinations are also generally discouraged.

Gana Koota primarily indicates similarity of temperament, behavioural style and the couple's ability to adjust within family life. It relates more directly to psychological compatibility than to health or longevity.

Gana Dosha Cancellation Rules from Classical Texts

1. Piyushadhara — Cancellation through Graha Maitri

rāśyadhipe mitryamupeyuṣi melanasya tārāviśuddhau ca gaṇasya doṣaḥ ।
na vidyate traijagatīprasiddhaḥ sadbhirbudhaiścāpi nirūpitoऽyam ।।

Meaning: Classical authorities state that Gana Dosha does not apply when the lords of the bride's and groom's Moon signs are mutually friendly, or when Tara compatibility is satisfactory.

2. Jyotirnibandha — Varna-Based Exception

vaiśya śūdrāla śīleṣu gaṇadoṣo na vidyate ।
grahamaitrī yadā pūrṇā gaṇadoṣo na vidyate ।।

Meaning: Gana Dosha is not given the same importance in charts belonging to Vaishya and Shudra Varnas. It is also completely cancelled when Graha Maitri is perfect and receives the full 5 points.

3. Jyotirnibandha — Different Nakshatra or Rashi Exception

rukṣaikye rāśibhede ca rāśyaikye rukṣabhinnake ।
nāḍīdoṣo na vidyate tathā gaṇakṛto raṇaḥ ।।

Meaning: When the bride and groom have the same nakshatra but different Moon signs, or the same Moon sign but different nakshatras, neither Nadi Dosha nor Gana Dosha applies.

4. Vasistha Samhita — Relative Importance by Varna

viprāṇāṃ nāḍīdoṣastu kṣatriyāṇāṃ bhakūṭakam ।
vaiśyānāṃ gaṇadoṣastu śūdrāṇāṃ varṇadoṣakaḥ ।।

Meaning: Gana Dosha is considered particularly relevant for the Vaishya Varna. For other Varnas, its severity is traditionally assessed as lower even when a mismatch is present.
