Vedic astrology lessons: start here

Start with birth charts, zodiac signs and houses, then move on to planetary combinations, dashas and transits. These 153 lessons introduce the vocabulary and methods used in Vedic astrology. No prior knowledge is needed for the opening lessons. Read in order or choose a familiar topic from the lesson list.

Three branches of Jyotish

Jyotish has several traditional branches. The following overview helps you see where chart calculation and interpretation fit into the subject.

1. Siddhanta Skandha (Mathematical Branch): Also known as Ganita Skandha, this deals with planetary positions, eclipses, calendar calculations (Year/Month), and time cycles. It further includes Siddhanta, Tantra, and Karana.
2. Samhita Skandha: This section explains how celestial phenomena (like comets or meteor showers) impact the world at large. Muhurta (electional astrology) is also a significant part of this branch.
3. Hora Skandha (Horoscopic Branch): This is the study of an individual's life based on their birth time and place to analyze auspicious and inauspicious results. This is what we commonly refer to as Jataka Shastra (Horoscopy).

The Ethics of an Astrologer (Daivagna)

While learning astrology is vital, the qualities of the practitioner are equally important. According to our scriptures, a true Daivagna (Astrologer) should embody the following virtues:

"Adweshi nitya-santushtah ganitagama paragah|
Muhurtaguna doshagno vagmi kushala-buddhiman||"

The verse values patience, knowledge of calculation, clear speech and sound judgment. These are useful habits for a student or practitioner; they do not make a prediction certain.

Keep a notebook. After each lesson, define one new term in your own words and identify it in a sample chart. Treat interpretations as traditional associations rather than promises about your future.
