Astrology Lessons - Planetary Significations (Graha Karakatvas)


There are two Gurus among the Navagrahas. One is the Guru of the Devas, Jupiter (Brihaspati), and the other is the Guru of the Asuras, Venus (Shukra). Both are benefic planets and both are providers of knowledge. However, while Jupiter teaches 'Dharma' (Wisdom/Righteousness), Venus provides 'Bhoga' (Luxury/Pleasure) and the knowledge of rejuvenation (Sanjeevani Vidya). Let's examine their significations.

1. Jupiter (Jupiter/Guru) - "Dhana, Putra Karaka"

Nature: The most benefic planet, Sattvic quality, Ether (Akasha) element. Jupiter is the significator of knowledge, wealth, and children.

Section Significations
Personal Intellect, wisdom, memory, dharma, compassion, truth, peace, optimism, and respect for elders.
Body Fat, liver, thighs, ears, brain power, arteries, and digestive power.
Society & Career Children (Progeny), elder brother, teachers (Gurus), judges, bankers, priests, and ministers.
Objects & Other Gold, wealth, yellow color, Northeast direction, Vedas, rituals/sacrifices, sweet substances, and chickpeas.

2. Venus (Venus/Shukra) - "Kalatra Karaka"

Nature: Benefic planet, Rajasic quality, Water element. Venus is the significator of love, marriage, and fine arts.

Section Significations
Personal Love, desire (Kama), attraction, artistic sense, gentleness, luxuries, and seeking comfort.
Body Reproductive fluids (semen/ovum), kidneys, face (glow), beautiful eyes, voice, and skin complexion.
Society & Career Wife (in a male chart), artists, actors, musicians, poets, women, and vehicle traders.
Objects & Other Diamond, silver, vehicles, perfumes, silk clothes, Southeast direction, bedroom, and flowers.
Notice the Difference: Jupiter gives "Respect" (Gauravam), while Venus gives "Glamour." Jupiter provides "Wealth" (accumulation), while Venus provides the "Yoga to enjoy" that wealth.
