Astrology Lessons - Planetary Combustion (Astangatva)

When a planet (except Rahu and Ketu) comes too close to the Sun, it loses its brilliance and strength. This state is called Combustion (Astangatva) or Moudhyam. Just as small lights disappear in front of the intense glare of the Sun, the significance of a combust planet becomes invisible or weakened in the horoscope.

Degrees of Combustion

Planets become combust when they fall within these specific distances from the Sun:

  • Moon: 12°
  • Mars: 17°
  • Mercury: 14° (12° when retrograde)
  • Jupiter: 11°
  • Venus: 10° (8° when retrograde)
  • Saturn: 15°

Predictive Impact of Combustion

Combust Planet General Results
Venus (Venus)Delay in marriage or lack of marital satisfaction. Emotional frustration.
Jupiter (Jupiter)Wisdom exists but goes unrecognized. Issues regarding progeny.
Saturn (Saturn)Intense work pressure. Conflicts between the native and father/authority.
Mars (Mars)Extreme aggression or internal frustration. Health issues related to blood or heat.
Remedy: Since a combust planet is internally weak, wearing its corresponding gemstone is generally not recommended (consultation is required). Instead, charity or mantra chanting related to that planet is the best way to gain its grace.
