Every Nakshatra is divided into 4 parts, known as Padas (Quarters). Each pada corresponds to one Navamsa. Furthermore, Nakshatras are classified by temperament into three Ganas, which play a major role in personality analysis and marriage matching.

Classification by Gana (Nature)

Gana Characteristics Nakshatras Included
Deva Gana
(Godly)
Peaceful nature, compassion, and altruism. They avoid conflicts. Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushyami, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Revati.
Manushya Gana
(Human)
Practical, social, and focused on material and emotional growth. Bharani, Rohini, Aridra, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Purvashada, Uttarashada, Purvabhadra, Uttarabhadra.
Rakshasa Gana
(Demonic)
Stubbornness, intense energy, courage, and independent willpower. Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Chitra, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Moola, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha.
Marriage Matching Tip: Compatibility is highest when both partners belong to the same Gana. A Deva Gana and Rakshasa Gana match is often considered challenging without other balancing factors.
