Astrology Lessons - Planetary Dignities (Exaltation & Debilitation)

In astrology, the sign a planet occupies is crucial for determining results. A planet is more powerful in its Exaltation (Ucha) sign than in its own home. Conversely, in its Debilitation (Neecha) sign, it loses its natural strength and fails to provide benefic results. Let's learn where each planet becomes strong.

Classification of Planetary Strengths

  1. Own House (Swa-Kshetra): The planet is in its own sign (comfortable state).
  2. Moolatrikona: A state stronger than its own house but slightly less than exaltation.
  3. Exaltation (Ucha): The highest point of strength where the planet gives peak results.
  4. Debilitation (Neecha): The point where the planet is at its weakest.

Summary of Planetary States

Sun: Attains Deep Exaltation at 10° in Aries. Attains Deep Debilitation at 10° in Libra. The first 20° of Leo is its Moolatrikona.

Moon: Deep Exaltation at 3° in Taurus. Deep Debilitation at 3° in Scorpio. The portion after 3° in Taurus is Moolatrikona.

Mars: Deep Exaltation at 28° in Capricorn. Deep Debilitation at 28° in Cancer. The first 18° of Aries is Moolatrikona.

Important Principle: The 180-Degree Rule

A planet is debilitated exactly in the 7th sign (180° away) from where it is exalted. For example, Sun is exalted in Aries (1st sign) and debilitated in Libra (7th sign).
