Astrology Lessons - Planetary Significations (Graha Karakatvas)


In astrology, if the 12 houses are the 'Fields', then the 9 planets are the forces that decide the 'Crop' to be harvested in those fields. Among the Navagrahas, the Sun (The King) and Moon (The Queen) are the most prominent. Their significations are analyzed below by category.

1. Sun (Sun/Ravi) - "Atma Karaka"

Nature: Cruel (Krura) planet, Masculine, Fire element. The Sun is the symbol of the soul, father, and authority.

Section Significations
Personal Soul (Atma), self-respect, courage, will power, honesty, punctuality, fame, majesty, anger, and leadership traits.
Body Bones, right eye (in males), left eye (in females), heart, stomach, head, bile (Pitta), immunity, and life force (Prana).
Society & Career Father, government, politics, king/official, medicine, and administrative officers.
Objects & Other Copper, East direction, worship of Shiva, red cloth, wheat, temples, hills, and forests.

2. Moon (Moon/Chandra) - "Manas Karaka"

Nature: Gentle (Saumya) planet, Feminine, Water element. The Moon is the symbol of the mind, mother, and emotions.

Section Significations
Personal Mind, emotions, thoughts, tranquility, sleep, memory, imagination, changeable nature, and kindness.
Body Blood, bodily fluids, left eye (in males), right eye (in females), chest, lungs, breasts, and phlegm (Kapha).
Society & Career Mother, agriculture, water-related businesses (Dairy/Liquids), travel, and sailors.
Objects & Other Silver, pearl, milk, rice, salt, Northwest direction (sometimes West), worship of Gauri, water, and white cloth.
Note: If the Sun is weakened in a horoscope, self-confidence is lost. If the Moon is weakened, it causes mental anxiety.
