Sankasti Chaturthi: Foods You Can Eat (Vrat-Approved Ingredients)


Observing the Sankashti Chaturthi vrat is a deeply meaningful practice in Hinduism, undertaken not just as a ritual but for a host of benefits that are believed to impact one's spiritual, personal, and physical well-being. Here are the key benefits associated with this sacred fast, dedicated to Lord Ganesha:

1. Fruits

All seasonal fruits are allowed and are a primary source of energy during the fast.

Examples: Bananas, Apples, Grapes, Oranges, Pomegranates, Papaya, Melons, Guava.

You can eat them whole or prepare a fruit salad (fruit chaat).

2. Vegetables & Tubers

A select list of vegetables is permitted.

Most Common: Potato (Aloo), Sweet Potato (Shakarkandi), Yam (Jimikand), Colocasia (Arbi), Raw Banana.

Others: Bottle Gourd (Lauki), Pumpkin (Kaddu), Tomato, Cucumber, Carrot, Ginger, Green Chilies.

What to Avoid: Onions, garlic, cauliflower, cabbage, brinjal, ladyfinger (bhindi), and leafy greens like spinach are generally avoided.

3. Flours & Fasting "Grains"

Regular grains like wheat and rice are strictly prohibited. Instead, special non-cereal flours are used.

  • Kuttu ka Atta (Buckwheat Flour)
  • Singhare ka Atta (Water Chestnut Flour)
  • Rajgira ka Atta (Amaranth Flour)
  • Sama ke Chawal (Barnyard Millet) – often called vrat ke chawal
  • Sabudana (Sago or Tapioca Pearls) – a very popular fasting staple


4. Spices & Herbs

Only mild and sattvic spices are used.

  • Sendha Namak (Rock Salt) – regular table salt is not used
  • Cumin Seeds/Powder (Jeera)
  • Black Pepper Powder (Kali Mirch)
  • Fresh Coriander Leaves (Dhania)
  • Green Cardamom (Elaichi)
  • Ginger, Green Chilies

What to Avoid: Turmeric (haldi), asafoetida (hing), mustard seeds (sarso), fenugreek seeds (methi), and garam masala are usually not allowed.

5. Dairy Products

Allowed dairy includes: Milk, Curd (Yogurt), Paneer (Indian cottage cheese), Buttermilk (Chaas), Ghee, Khoya/Mawa.

6. Nuts & Seeds

Commonly used nuts: Peanuts (Moongphali), Almonds (Badam), Walnuts (Akhrot), Cashews (Kaju).

Makhana (Fox Nuts) – excellent for a light, roasted snack.

7. Sweeteners

Sugar, Jaggery (Gud), and Honey are allowed.

8. Beverages

Permitted drinks include: Water, Coconut Water, Milk, Lassi, Buttermilk, Fresh Fruit Juices (homemade is best).

Snacks & Light Meals:

  • Sabudana Khichdi: A classic dish made with soaked sabudana, boiled potatoes, peanuts, and mild spices.
  • Roasted Makhana: Fox nuts roasted in a little ghee with a sprinkle of rock salt and pepper.
  • Fruit Chaat: A mix of your favorite fruits with a dash of lemon juice and rock salt.
  • Aloo Chaat: Boiled potato cubes, lightly fried in ghee and mixed with lemon juice, green chilies, and coriander.


Main Meals (Lunch/Dinner):

  • Kuttu ki Poori with Aloo ki Sabzi: Puffy bread made from buckwheat flour served with a simple potato curry made with a tomato-ginger base (no onion or garlic).
  • Rajgira Paratha: Flatbread made from amaranth flour, which can be eaten with plain curd or a simple vegetable curry.
  • Sama ki Khichdi or Pulao: A rice-like dish made from barnyard millet with potatoes and peanuts.
  • Vrat-wale Aloo: A dry or gravy-based potato preparation using only vrat-approved spices.
