The five limbs of Panchanga

Tithi

A lunar day based on each 12° of angular separation between the Moon and the Sun.

Vara

The weekday and its traditional planetary ruler.

Nakshatra

One of the 27 equal stellar divisions occupied by the Moon.

Yoga

One of 27 divisions calculated from the sum of the sidereal solar and lunar longitudes.

Karana

Half of a Tithi, corresponding to 6° of Moon–Sun angular separation.

How to read the timings

Check ending times

Tithi and Nakshatra may change during the civil date. Read the ending time rather than assuming they continue until midnight.

Use local sunrise

Many observances use local sunrise as an important boundary, so the selected city and timezone matter.

Do not use one factor alone

A full Muhurta may also consider the activity, Lagna, planetary conditions and personal birth factors.

Expect methodological differences

Ayanamsha, sunrise definition, ephemeris settings, coordinates and regional rules can create differences between Panchangas.

Do not delay emergency care, safety action, legal deadlines or essential travel because of a Panchanga period.
