Sydney · May 2029: Ekadashi Dates & Parana Times

Ekadashi is observed on the eleventh lunar Tithi of each Paksha. The fasting date and Parana window depend on Tithi boundaries, local sunrise and the traditional rule set being followed.

Before using the dates

  • Select the correct location: sunrise and Parana clock times change by city.
  • Select your tradition: Smarta and Vaishnava calendars can apply different Viddha and Mahadvadashi rules.
  • Follow your established practice: when a temple or lineage uses another rule, continue with the tradition you normally observe.

How Ekadashi dates are selected

The calculation examines Dashami, Ekadashi and Dwadashi in relation to local sunrise and, where applicable, Arunodaya and tradition-specific exceptions. It is not based only on the civil date.

Smarta mode

Uses the Smarta rule set configured in this calendar. It primarily considers Ekadashi in relation to sunrise together with the applicable Viddha rules.

Vaishnava mode

Uses the Vaishnava rule set configured in this calendar, including stricter Dashami or Arunodaya considerations and applicable Mahadvadashi rules.

The two modes can show different fasting days. A Vaishnava fast does not automatically move to the next day in every case.

Parana: completing the fast

Parana is normally performed on Dwadashi within the window displayed for the selected place. The limits can depend on sunrise, Dwadashi and Hari Vasara.

Hari Vasara

Hari Vasara is a traditionally restricted portion at the beginning of Dwadashi. Follow the calculator’s Parana window and your family, temple or lineage practice.

Fasting and health

Ekadashi observance ranges from complete fasting to fruit, milk or a simple permitted diet. Do not stop prescribed medicine, necessary food or hydration.

Questions devotees commonly ask

Why can Smarta and Vaishnava Ekadashi fall on different dates?

The traditions can apply different rules concerning Dashami contact, Arunodaya, sunrise and Mahadvadashi. A difference is therefore not always a calculation error.

Why does Parana time differ by city?

Parana is tied to local sunrise and Tithi timing, so the clock time can differ between cities.

Should I change traditions when another calendar shows a different date?

Usually no. Follow the temple, Matha, family or lineage tradition you normally observe.

Can children, elderly people or people taking medicines observe Ekadashi?

They may follow a modified observance suitable for their health. Medical needs should take priority over a strict fast.

About the calculation

This page applies the Smarta or Vaishnava rule set implemented in the Ekadashi engine. Other Panchangas may use a different lineage rule or boundary convention.
