In Jyotisha, Shani is revered as the giver of the fruits of karma and a guardian of justice. Shani Trayodashi and Shani Jayanti are occasions for worship, discipline and charity. During Sade Sati, Ardhashtama Shani, Ashtama Shani or Shani Mahadasha, devotees observe them as spiritual support and a reminder to act responsibly.
Shani Jayanti follows Amanta Vaishakha Krishna Amavasya (Purnimanta Jyeshtha Amavasya), using the midday tithi rule. The regular month is used when there is an intercalary month.
Saturdays with Trayodashi at local sunrise, in either fortnight, are listed here. Dates and times depend on the selected location.
Shani Pradosha is an evening Shiva observance. Its date can differ from the sunrise-based Shani Trayodashi dates above; the Saturday Pradosha dates are listed separately below.
Based on the birth Moon sign, not the Sun sign or ascendant. The traditional transit indications below use sidereal Lahiri positions; individual results also depend on the full birth chart and planetary periods.

Trayodashi is the thirteenth tithi of each fortnight. Saturday Trayodashi is associated with Shani worship; Saturday Pradosha is Shiva worship when Trayodashi overlaps the evening observance. This page lists sunrise-based Shani Trayodashi and evening Shani Pradosha separately. Some traditions give particular importance to the waning-fortnight observance.
Shani Jayanti celebrates Shani as the son of Surya and Chhaya. In the traditional birth narrative, Samjna leaves her shadow-form Chhaya with Surya, and Shani is born to Chhaya. Devotees offer prayer, japa, homa and charity, including when seeking peace during difficult Saturn periods or placements. These are devotional practices for peace and self-discipline.
Amanta months end at new moon; Purnimanta months end at full moon. The Amavasya called Vaishakha in the Amanta system is called Jyeshtha in the Purnimanta system. This calendar follows that shared observance. A different local festival custom should be distinguished from this difference in month names.
| Aspect | Shani Trayodashi | Shani Jayanti |
|---|---|---|
| Tithi and weekday | Trayodashi on Saturday, in either lunar fortnight. | Amanta Vaishakha Amavasya / Purnimanta Jyeshtha Amavasya; any weekday. |
| Frequency | The number varies by year, location and the sunrise or evening criterion. | Once a year in the tradition followed by this calendar; local traditions can differ. |
| Principal worship | Shani; Shiva and Parvati for Pradosha worship. | Shani; Hanuman is also worshipped in some traditions. |
| Worship time | Morning Shani worship by custom; Shiva worship during the local Pradosha period. | During Amavasya, following the local temple's schedule; the tithi-selection rule is not a universal puja muhurta. |
Traditional accounts describe Shani worshipping Shiva at Kashi and receiving his grace and planetary authority. The story connects Shani worship with humility, perseverance and devotion to Shiva; it does not make every Saturday Trayodashi identical to the evening Pradosha observance.
In the Pradosha narrative, Shandilya advises a Brahmin woman, her son Suchivrata and the orphaned prince Dharmagupta to worship Shiva. Dharmagupta later regains his kingdom. The story honours devoted Pradosha worship and perseverance through adversity.
The traditional account of Dasharatha describes his prayer to Shani to protect his people from the feared famine associated with Rohini's affliction. The Dasharatha Shani Stotra is recited in this devotional tradition. The hymn expresses a prayer for protection, peace and strength through hardship.
Bathe, wear clean clothes and make a sincere intention for worship and good conduct. Sesame in bathing water or an oil bath is followed in some households; observe your family's practice. Fasting should suit your capacity and customary guidance.
At a temple, offer sesame oil, black sesame, blue flowers or shami leaves where that custom is accepted. Ask the priest about abhisheka, lamps, circumambulation and where to stand. Practices such as thirteen oil lamps or standing to one side are local observances, not rules common to every temple.
In some traditions, a person views their reflection in sesame oil held in a metal bowl and then donates the oil or vessel; a coin may be added by custom. Arrange the offering with the temple or a willing recipient. This symbolic practice is especially associated with Shani worship and Chhaya.
For Shani Pradosha, worship Shiva and Parvati near the local sunset period. Water, panchamrita, sugarcane juice and bilva leaves are offered according to temple practice; follow its Nandi-darshana custom. Pradosha is not a fixed clock time everywhere. This calendar uses the first fifth of the night after sunset for selecting Pradosha dates.
Recite a familiar Shani prayer, the Dasharatha Shani Stotra or Hanuman Chalisa. A count of 108 is customary in some practices. For bija-mantra or formal homa practice, follow the instruction received in your tradition.
Offer food and useful assistance to people in need, workers, older people and people with disabilities. Clothing, footwear, umbrellas, sesame or iron articles may be donated according to actual need and local practice. Feeding crows or dogs is also customary in some places. Honesty, compassion and respect for others are central to this observance.
The Sanskrit texts are kept intact; their meanings are translated below. Pronunciation and recitation should follow your teacher or family tradition.
