The Prohibition of Sighting the Moon
A unique tradition of Vinayaka Chavithi is avoiding looking at the moon. It's believed that sighting the moon can lead to Mithyapavada—facing false accusations.
The Legend of the Syamantaka Jewel
This belief comes from a story where Lord Krishna was falsely accused of stealing the Syamantaka jewel after he glanced at the moon on this day. Reading or listening to this story, the Syamantakopakhyanam, is the primary remedy.
Remedy if You Accidentally See the Moon
If listening to the full story isn't possible, chanting the following shloka 11 times is a powerful remedy:
सिंहः प्रसेनमवधीत्सिंहो जाम्बवता हतः।
सुकुमारक मा रोदीस्तव ह्येष स्यमन्तकः॥Transliteration:
Simhaḥ prasenamavadhītsimho jāmbavatā hataḥ,
Sukumāraka mā rodīstava hyeṣa syamantakaḥ.Meaning: "The lion killed Prasena; the lion was killed by Jambavan. O gentle boy, do not cry, for this Syamantaka jewel belongs to you."
A Simplified Guide to Vinayaka Chavithi Puja at Home
Here is a concise worship procedure ( Sankshipta Puja Vidhi) for your home celebration.
- Prepare the Idol: Traditionally, use an eco-friendly clay ( matti) idol. Perform Prana Pratishtha to invoke the deity's presence.

- Perform the Puja: Conduct the 16-step Shodashopachara Puja with devotion.

Festival Duration and Visarjan (Immersion)
The festival continues for up to ten days. On the final day, September 6, 2025, the idol is respectfully immersed in a water body. This Ganesha Visarjan ( Nimajjanam) symbolizes Ganesha's return to his celestial home, taking with him the obstacles of his devotees.
As an eco-friendly alternative, you can place the clay idol in your garden, where it can naturally dissolve back into the earth.
